There's is nothing like a new purse to put a spring in a women's step.

For other women is goes beyond a fashion statement. It's all about being in control of their lives.

With that in mind, the Bay Area Women's Center hosts its sixth annual Power of the Purse, presented by the Wildfire Credit Union, will be from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 11 at Curtiss Hall at Saginaw Valley State University.

Tickets are $30 and available at the Women's Center or by calling 989-686-2251.

Lynn Weaver, director of development for the center, is expecting a sell out of 500 tickets, says there may also be some tickets at the door.

This fundraiser not only uses the symbol of the purse and what it stands for in many area lives but also a chance to have some fun.

"It's so fun," Weaver said. "It's amazing the buzz and energy in the room from all these women. They are so passionate about it. They are just so excited to see each other to chat about the purses have food and cocktails."

This year, says Weaver, the quality of the purses is even better than previous years. Purses are donated by individuals and area businesses.

"We have hit 500 purses," said Weaver. "There is some really cool stuff."

There is really cool stuff in every price range from the $10 purse table - some have gift cards inside - all the way up to over $100 in a live auction.

There is also a chance to win a purse in a bucket raffle of 24 purses. Tickets are $5 for two tickets or $20 for 20 tickets. There is also 50/50 tickets at two for $5 or 20 for $20.

Money raised goes into the center's general fund for programs.

"The cool thing about this (fundraiser) is it creates so much more awareness of the center and our services. People don't know everything we do. They are always amazed at the depth of services we have free of charge."

By the way, says Weaver, the 32-bed center is full most nights.

Adding to the fun is nine gourmet food stations manned by area restaurants, including Asian Noodle, Dine by Design, Domino's, Grand Traverse Pie Co., Riverfront Grille at the Doubletree, Saginaw Bay Yacht Club, SVSU Dining services, The Gourmet Cupcake Shoppe, and VNO Wine Warehouse & New Age Restaurant.

By the way, men are welcome as well.
