MOVIE REVIEW: "Battle of the Sexes"--An Interesting Movie

I saw "Battle of the Sexes". Interesting movie. I remember the actual tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. I remember the hype and the talk preceding it. This movie brought everything back.

The movie stressed the way Bobby was desperate for attention and money. He is a compulsive gambler and wants back into the game of tennis. Steve Carell played Bobby with an intensity and drive that was perfect. You wanted to smack him when he really laid on the "male chauvinist" act. What started as something that would make him money and attention turned into a national Battle of the Sexes. After turning him down, Billie, played very well by Emma Stone, knew she finally had to accept his challenge for women in general.

The movie begins with a showing of the terrible discrepancy in the pay for the women's tournaments and the men's. Billie and her tough agent, played by Sarah Silverman, decide to break away and form their own league. It is such a brilliant reminder of where we women were and how far we have come.

The real-life Billie Jean King helped in the production of the movie. She allowed them to delve into her, at the time, confused sexuality. This added another layer to the story.

I recommend this movie especially to women who have forgotten how women athletes and women, in general, were treated.

So go. Have fun. Eat popcorn.
