The Bay Concert Band,
under the direction of Music and Artistic Director
Peter Makar Jr IV,
will present a concert entitled "Stage and Screen VI" on Tuesday, February 27.
This will be the sixth installment of the band's yearly Stage and Screen series.
As the title suggests, music will range from the world of ballet to a small screen theme song.
The ballet portion will feature the
Berceuse and Finale from Stravinsky's ballet
Firebird.
Based on a Russian fairy tale, the ballet tells the story of a Prince who captures the magical Firebird and uses that magic to free the people from the evil Koschei.
The world of opera is represented by,
Aaron Copland's A Promise of Living from the "The Tenderland". Although the work was never well received and often criticized for being more suited to the new medium of television than the large stage, today it provides a piece audiences love.
Broadway's
Man of La Mancha started as a non-musical teleplay written by Dale Wasserman for CBS's "DuPont Show of the Month" program. The musical version was first played at the Goodspeed Opera House in 1965. In total the show ran for 2.328 performances and won five Tony Awards.
The movies are represented by two works on this program.
From the 1960's the band will play the theme from "
The Magnificent Seven". That movie was actually a remake of a Japanese film called "The Seven Samurai", which was rewritten into a classic American "western".
The second piece is music from the classic
Godfather films.
Intermezzo Sinfonica is from the opera Cavalleria Rusticana that is featured in the "Godfather III".
The music comes from the movie's final scenes where the family is leaving the opera house and is attacked by an assassin. The Godfather's daughter is killed and he is left alone.
Reflecting on his life, after failing in his deeply held dogma to protect his family, he dies of old age.
The selections noted above, and a few additional pieces the band will performe, will make this "Truly Mixed Bag" of music from stage and screen a real treat to enjoy. (And if you clap really loud at the end, we understand that the band may play an encore that's a real crowd pleaser!)
Doors at
Bay City Central High School Auditorium open at 7 pm and the program starts at 7:30. Admission is $5. Students in grades six and under admitted free.
