Candace Bales Speaks to Rotary On Downtown Activities

Candace Bales
Starting her photo tour, Bales showed many before and after picutres of familar downtown landmarks. The waterfront, which was once treated as a second class area, is now a sparkling feature and draw.
Bales also showed some of the oldest buisinesses, some still in their same buildings: The Fabric Fair at 58 years; St. Laurent Brothers - 110 years, and Herman Hiss & Co, 147 years. This was followed by changes such as the historic Mill End store now replaced by the new Mill End Lofts, home of the Bay City Times, among other establishments. She showed Dunlop's in what most thought to be the 40's and then in the 60's.
Stressing that Downtown Bay City has created a "sense of place", Bales defined the phrase to include characteristics that make a place special or unique, and that fosters a sense of "authentic human attachment and belonging".
Among the unique places are the Third Street Waterfall Park and the historic kiosk placed there by this Rotary Club. She talked about the "Fridays at the Falls" mini-concerts, weddings and other events held by the waterfall.
Wenonah Park was highlighted as a park that was built in a day when municipal parks didn't hold that special a place in the public mind. Today our park is loved by all and is home to Wednesdays in the Park concerts in the summer. Bales showed the master plan for a redevelopment of the park, the first part of which is completed. She said it was very worthwhile to complete the project.
She also talked about condos and apartments in downtown and the significance of having people live there.
Bales talked about a number of unique new, small businesses that have recently opened. She also talked about big business and the development of the Uptown project. She outlined several ideas, including a water taxi, that are being discussed to connect Uptown with Downtown.
Dow will soon bring 300 employees into town to view their new Uptown facilities. The DMB will facilitate and guide the employees around the area, showing them where to shop, eat, park, etc. Eric Jylha, one of the guides, chimed in "and where the ATM's are". Bales was excited because she'll get the chance to see the new buildings herself.
"Downtown, Uptown - All Around Town"... however one looks at it, downtown Bay City is a great place to work, live, or just visit.
CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS
Chuck Cusick updated the club on the situation in Guatemala where we support the Adopt a Village program. A recent storm has caused significant damage and destruction. Chuck offered a $500 match to funds contributed to this cause.
Rob Clark passed around a sign up sheet for Rotarians who will take a 1 hours shift on August 13 for the Hidden Harvest Food Drive, which will precede the Club Picnig in Rotary Park. The drive will run from 8am to 5pm and Rob would like four Rotarians each hour.
President Ron inaugurated a new feature of the meetings: a 2 minute business spotlight where a member may talk about his business and what they have to offer. Ron outlined the work of the Bay County Historic Society and the Museum.
Members were reminded to be sure that they get a Centennial Rotary Pin. There are some left.
Cindy Chadwick, chief Sargent at Arms, reviewed club fines again: $2 if you leave early. $5 if your cell phone rings ($10 if you answer it). $1 for a happy buck announcement. $2 for a commercial. And sometimes the Sargent may impost the "Kwiatkowski Fine" if you make a program out of an announcement.
CORRECTION: Last week's Breezes said that Rick King was the 2013-14 president of RI. That should have been Ron Burton. The mistake was due to an overly literal reading of the photo caption on page 63 of the July 2014 Rotarian that shows "Huang and Past RI President Rick King".

Charles and Dr. Alexandra Adams, the lead Rotarians on the project will give and update on the project and their perspective on its impact on health and wellness in the region.
July 19, 2014: Field Neurosciences Institute Mr. Thomas Cline will review the FNI as well as highlight its largest annual fundraiser, a concert that typically features Saginaw native Brian D'Arcy James.
