For the sixth year, the Bay Area Soccer Association hosted Soccerween, a youth soccer tournament at the BASA Soccer Complex on Monitor Road. The event is a BASA fundraiser with all proceeds being used to promote area soccer in the form of soccer camp scholarships, player development and purchasing of nets to be placed at area schools and parks.

BASA Recreational Coordinator, Brian Scherzer noted that the supplying of soccer goals to area schools not only benefit BASA youth members who can practice in their communities but allows all children to experience the fun of soccer and hopefully gain an appreciation for the sport as well as desire to get involved in playing it.

Soccerween drew in 62 competitive youth soccer teams from across the state including teams from Cartathia near Sterling Heights, Elkton, Clio as well as teams from the Great Lakes Bay Region This totaled almost 800 smiling, energetic youths to ascend on the fields for a great day of competition and fun. The teams were encouraged to dress up in Halloween fashion adding to the delight of the contestants and the families and friends that lined the field to cheer on their favorite teams.

The teams ranged in age from 8-14 years old with the girls playing on Saturday and the boys playing on Sunday. Each team played 3 games in a tournament format befitting the number of teams in their bracket. Judging by the smiles and excitement exhibited by each team, it was the playing and the costumes that made this event special.

BASA Recreational Coordinator, Brian Scherzer praised the hard work put in by volunteers Jennifer Swartz and Jennifer Carrol who were the main organizers of this years event as well as all the other volunteers who made these games so successful. Meijer and Chemical Bank were the primary sponsors while several other area business contributed as well.

If any local youth desires to play soccer, they are encouraged to contact the BASA web site for more information: www.basasoccer.com. Registration for the spring season begins the second week of January. Judging by the amount of fun these kids were having on a sunny fall day, it is a great time for all.
