If it just was up to Bay County voters, Mark Schauer would be governor and Ron Mindykowski would be state senator from the 31st District.

Schauer and running mate Lisa Brown got 18,902 votes in Bay County (50.58 percent) while the statewide winners Rick Snyder and Brian Calley trailed with 17,471 votes (46.76 percent).

Likewise, political neophyte Ron Mindykowski, Democrat from Bay City, got 19,980 votes (54.44 percent) to 16,675 (45.44 percent) for State Senator Mike Green, veteran from Mayville who otherwise easily secured a second term with overwhelming GOP margins in Tuscola and Lapeer counties.

That startling result may launch the popular "Pure Mindy" accordion-playing campaigner into a future in politics down the road, at least from a Bay County base.

Despite his stunning local support, the 51-year-old Western High teacher and drama coach couldn't overcome the statewide Republican wave, and low Democratic turnout.

Sen. Green bested Mindykowski 9,263 to 5,362 in Tuscola County and 17,410 to 11,209 in Lapeer to notch an overall 44,833 to 37,339 win, according to unofficial results posted by Secretary of State Ruth Johnson's office.

Green's three-county district total was 54.5 percent of the total vote of 82,172 while Mindykowski garnered 45.4 percent.

Following statewide outcomes in Bay County were Republican Attorney General Bill Schuette, 20,468 over Dem Mark Totten, 15,118. Likewise Gary Peters topped Terri Lynn Land 21,463 to 13,745 in Bay as the Democrat went on to secure a six year term in the open U.S. Senate seat vacated by retiring Carl Levin.

Unofficial results from the Nov. 4 general election posted by County Clerk Cindy Luczak show that 37,829 voters cast ballots either at the polling places or absentee. The turnout was 47.02 percent of 80,447 registered.

Second-term State Rep. Charles Brunner coasted to victory over Republican challenger Carlos Jaime by a 19,749 count to 8,664. Brunner's vote was 69.39 percent of the total while Jaime got 30.44 percent.

Also bucking the statewide GOP wave in Bay County were Democrats Pamela Pugh Smith and Casandra E. Ulbrich with 16,480 and 15,781 votes respectively for State Board of Education. Trailing here were Republican statewide winners Maria Carl, 13544, and Jonathan Tade Williams, 12,640.

Similar results in favor of Democrats here were recorded in voting for University of Michigan Regents, Michigan State University trustee and Wayne State University Board of Governors.

Brian Zahra led balloting for Justice of the Supreme Court with 18,139 votes in Bay County to 16,365 for Richard Bernstein and 12,181 for James Robert Redford.

David Viviano led the voting for the partial term on the State Supreme Court with 19,147 votes in Bay County.

Democrat Godfrey Dillard closed on Secretary of State Ruth Johnson with 16,642 votes to 17,838 for the GOP incumbent in Bay County.
