Overcast skies and threatening forecasts didn't keep the Saturday crowds at home as the 42nd Annual Riverside Art Festival kicked off this weekend. Exhibitors from all over Michigan with a few from Ohio ascended upon the Bay City waterfront to show their creativity to the delight of the approximately 10,000 visitors.

This is an annual event that in many ways kicks off the Art Festivals across the state as well as the downtown festivals as school is now out. Most importantly, this is a very successful fundraiser for the local YWCA to support their many programs geared toward empowering girls and woman in the Great Lakes Bay Region.

This year's event stretched down Water Street from 4th St to the Doubletree Hotel. Along the way festival goers were treated to some very beautiful creations sure to please the vast interests of visitors. What seemed very appealing were the varied levels of artistic items for customers to choose from.

Jewelry is always a main stay of these art festivals and there were various styles to satisfy everyone's tastes from polished stones, to silver creations to custom cut glass creations offering a variety to choose from. Colorful shells from all over the world made to look like flowers, cement leaves for patios and decks, unique pottery, burl wood puzzle jewelry boxes, metal works and designs and stunning cedar and other wood furniture where just a sample of what this festival had to offer.

A nice feature was the Kids Zone held in Wenona Park. This offered activities for the children to enjoy. Bouncy tents, face painting and other activities made sure there was something for everyone.

The Community interest groups also stepped in to participate. Camp Fish Tales, DHHS Foster Care recruiting, Saginaw Bay Community Sailing Association, Studio 23 and Save Brian's House were just a few of the organizations that took part in this year's event. It also was an opportunity for the YWCA to get their message and information out to the public and in particular the girls and women of the Bay City area. Spreading the word of everyone's cause is part of the charm that makes the Riverside Art Festival special.

Sunday's morning showers may have slowed the crowds, but the skies cleared to let everyone enjoy one more day of this year's event.
