GSE Member Liberty Starkweather
Liberty Starkweather presented a slide show and talk about the Group Study Exchange (GSE) trip to Greece taken last Fall. The group of 5 young professionals, plus one Rotary advisor, spent a month in the Greek Islands visiting Rotary Clubs, businesses and cultural sites. The month long trip

The team spent their month mainly in the islands around the south part of the country. They visited two sites on the mainland. The team went on to visit many landmarks around the area as well as businesses and vocational stops.

The first stop was in Athens where the team met and visited with the Greek team that came here last year. Golf being a favorite sport in Greece, the team visited the one golf course in the area. When they told the Greeks how many golf courses there were in the Michigan district the Greeks were overwhelmed.

The team also visited Crete and the Rotary club of Heraklion Candia. They went on to the club in Syros as well as the Rotaract Club of Ermoupolic. There was a district gathering in Patmos and the club and Rotaract Club in Rhodes. The team visited Kos, Santorini and Patra.

While on Crete the team visited a school. Liberty said students will typically attend from 8:00 to 3:00 much as a US student would. After school, however, students may well be thrown into additional classes that run from 3 to 8 pm and address the student's specific interests.

The team traveled between islands on large ferries; boats much larger than what one might see around Mackinaw Island in Michigan. When leaving Crete the entire Family of Rotary came out to see the team off, including spouses, children and dogs.

The team reported having a wonderful trip and the opportunity to learn a great deal about another country.
