They call themselves the Literate Lutherans, and when it comes to the Literacy Council of Bay County's Adult Spelling Bee, they are a forced to be reckoned with.

The team, which includes Tracy Teich, Linda Maday and Jean Kahl, representing Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church, will defend their title as best spellers in Bay County come 6 p.m. Feb. 25 at the State Theatre, 913 Washington Ave.

"We've won four times," says leader Teich proudly.

Kathy Rayner, executive director of the council is looking for other teams to sign up for this eighth annual event.

Those wishing to test their spelling skills against the Literate Lutherans and the Spell Binders from the Bay County Library System have until Feb. 15 to sign up by calling the council at 686-8700.

Winners receive a traveling plaque and bragging rights for the year.

Cost is $150 per three man team. Spectators are welcome as well. Tickets are $5 at the door, with each admission including finger foods and door prizes from local merchants.

"Our goal this year is to make a little over $1,000," said Rayner. "the money goes toward supplies for our free summer tutoring program for kids in kindergarten through third grade. The goal of the program is to raise reading and math skills."

Tech offers this bit of adivce.

"I love words, I'm a big reader," she said. "I think the English language has a whole lot of wonderful words in it. When I hear a word, I see it pictured in front of me if I know the word."

But, once there was even a word that stumped Teich and giving them one of their few losses.

"It was carrom," she said. "It's a game like billiards and I didn't know it. I didn't see anything in front of my eyes. There was no word there."
