Great Lakes Bay Region - Monday, January 26: In celebration of National Mentoring Month, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Great Lakes Bay Region recognized outstanding volunteers and supporters on January 15th for "Thank Your Mentor Day." Big Brother and Big Sister of the Year awards, as well as the annual Friendship Award were presented at the 2015 Volunteer Appreciation Banquet. This event was held at Memorial Presbyterian Church with dinner made possible by the generous donations from Meijer, Family Fare and Kappa Sigma Fraternity at Northwood University.

The awards for Bigs of the Year were presented to: Rudy Barron, Big Brother of the Year and Lindsay Barron, Big Sister of the Year for Isabella County; Wayne Thomas, Big Brother of the Year and Crystal Sanders, Big Sister of the Year for Saginaw County; Dave Shibley, Big Big Brother of the Year and Kerri LaFore, Big Sister of the Year for Midland County; Jeff Wright, Big Brother of the Year and Amanda Sampson, Big Sister of the Year for Bay County. Rachel LaFrance (Midland), Danielle Premo (Bay City), Katelin Frazier (Saginaw) and Rebba Maylone (Isabella) were named Teaming Up with YOUth Big Sisters of the Year, while Robert T. Arnold (Midland) was named Lunchbox Learners Volunteer of the Year.

"Without the hard work and dedication of all the volunteers, it would be impossible to change the lives of children in our community for the better, forever" says Susan Putnam, the agency's President & CEO. "These volunteers represent the reason our agency makes the impact that it does in our community."

The 2015 Big Brothers Big Sisters Friendship Award was presented to The Saginaw Spirit Hockey Club. The Friendship Award recognizes an individual, business or group that has gone above and beyond to support the mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters. For years, the Saginaw Spirit Hockey Club has consistently supported Big Brothers Big Sisters through the donation of tickets and by providing generous door prizes for the annual Bowl for Kids' Sake event. Most notably, through the direction of Dan Wiegle, Director of Business Development, the Saginaw Spirit chose Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Great Lakes Bay Region as its partner for the Jet's Pizza Kid of the Game promotion. Over the past two years, more than 250 Bigs and Littles have benefited from this once-in-a-lifetime experience that includes a limo ride to a Saginaw Spirit game complete with pizza and soda, a tour of the locker room and participation in the High Five Alley and Chuck a Puck games.

"We are grateful for the time and talents of the hundreds of volunteers that serve the children in our region," says board president, Charlie Schwedler "Those who can, do, and those who can do more, volunteer and we are thankful they have chosen Big Brothers Big Sisters."
