Brian's House Receives Blessing

Brian's House set to reopen after the Fourth of July

It was a very sad day in 2012 for the people of Bay County when Brian's House, a hospice home, closed. An important need of compassion and dignity for those in the final hours of life as well as their families was lost. But as the Phoenix rose from the ashes, so is Brian's House thanks to the dedication of many people like Delilah Maxwell, president of the Community group Save Brian's House.

On March 7, friends of Brian's House and members of the community gathered at the new Brian's House location at 664 W. Nebobish Rd in Hampton Township. They gathered as part of a Blessing Ceremony of the new building and kicking off the construction of the new facility. Within a couple hours of the blessing, construction had already started as the good folks of J.R. Dahn Construction out of Essexville immediately got to work renovating a former church that is now Brian's House.

William A. Kibbe & Associates provided the professional architectural and engineering design which will transform this former church into a 4000 square foot 6-bed facility that will also include two kitchens, one at each end of the facility. This will allow families to make meals or even "bake cookies" adding to the comfort for the residents to enjoy. The plans also include an additional 900 square-foot sunroom being added onto the south side of the facility. As Maxwell explained, this room will allow residents to still enjoy the outdoors when maybe they are not able to actually go outside.



Construction is slated to take 16 weeks with completion expected by June 28. McLaren Bay Medical Foundation, the former Brian's House funding mechanism, has given $134,000 toward this project and is donating the furniture from the previous Brian's House. When all is done, Brian's House is expected to open shortly after the Fourth of July.

So far, the Save Brian's House organization has raised $500,000 of the projected $700,000 needed to complete the renovations. Fundraising will continue to not only complete the project but to create an endowment fund to allow low-income families to also use the facility.

Compassus, a hospice and palliative care company, will be providing the caring service to Brian's House. They are expected to employ 12 individuals providing 24-hour care. This care will include a registered nurse and an aide on duty all the times. Volunteers will be needed to help out at the facility providing such needed help as answering the phones, sitting with residents and other needed functions to allow trained staff to attend to more needed care.
