Terri Trotter
Terri Trotter, President and CEO of the Midland Center for the Arts (MCFTA) spoke to Rotary Tuesday. She talked about the organization and upcoming programs.

When people were asked what they liked, most responses were about Dow Gardens. In fact, the widely known gardens are a separate organization but share the same general location and much the same support.

Terri mentioned the Whiting Forest just down the street. Very soon the Forest will open a new canopy walk enabling people to experience the forest from about 35 feet in the air as they walk through the forest canopy. This will be one of the few, and in fact the longest accessible canopy walk in the country.

MCFTA is known for its performing arts programs and events but it also incorporates the Alden B Dow Museum of Science and Art. The latest show at the museum is "Design Zone" which is a very STEM-oriented museum show that teaches how the modern world is designed and works. This compliments a number of programs like Family Challenge Days and Thursday STEM Night.

The organization may be better known for its entertainment, which brings in nationally known shows as well as hosting local productions. Terri was excited to talk about partner organizations like the Kennedy Center. Upcoming events will include shows like One-Man Star Wars, Erth's Dinosaur Zoo LIVE, Beauty and the Beast, and the Midland Symphony.

The MCFTA operates on a nearly $8 million annual budget and employees over 75 people. The vast majority of this money comes from private sources. Less than one percent comes from sources like state arts groups and the NEA. Most support comes from Midland and Midland County.

As a member of the Regional Alliance, the MCFTA recognizes the importance of emphasizing quality local entertainment. People don't have to go to Detroit or Chicago for events because they are right here.

The center serves about 120,000 people annually and half those come from outside of Midland County. This has an important economic impact as statistics show that people in the state spend about $17 per ticket beyond the cost of the ticket when they attend an event.
