The Polio Campaign Through Junior High School Eyes

Owen Clark Presents Polio Story to Junior High Class

All Rotarians know the story of Rotary's efforts to eradicate Polio from the face of the earth. With the help of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, millions of dollars have been raised that used in the battle. Today there are almost no cases of the dread disease left, and experts anticipate that there will be none in just a few years.

Although the story is familiar, when Chuck Cusick presented his periodic update last Tuesday he did something different. He showed the slide show and talk that Owen Clark, son of Past President Rob Clark, recently gave to "Mrs. Meggitt's 6th Grade Global Studies Class" at North Central Junior High in Owen's new home of North Liberty, Iowa.

Owen had been encouraged to research and talk about Polio for a school assignment by his father Rob, always an ardent supporter of Rotary's efforts to fight the disease. Chuck relayed a story from Rob who said "Mrs. Meggitt ask me 'Now what is this POLO report anyway'. That simple misunderstanding is exactly the reason a report on POLIO is important to give to schools today."

Although familiar, seeing the story through Owen's eyes and his slides gave an entirely new perspective on the effort. Through research, images, and interviews Owen had crystallized the effort in a way more effective than many other talks.

Thanks, Owen! You make us proud and bring a new clarity to Rotary's efforts.

CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS

President Andrea thanked President-Elect Bob Chadwick for standing in last week.

Andrea went on to report on the Club Board meeting held prior to the regular meeting. Among the board actions was a discussion of the budget, which is on track. The board also discussed the Zombie Run fundraiser. That committee is starting to meet. Tara Welch talked about the Club's Facebook site and the potential for buying a dedicated cell phone app to go with that site.

Andrea reported that the sale of raffle tickets for the George Lewis paintings to be given at the upcoming District Conference are going well. Each club is asked to sell 10 tickets and our club has sold 6.

By the time you read this the deadline for Community Grants will have been passed. As of last Tuesday, there were eight grants in hand. A few more may have made the deadline. The Committee's selection will be announced soon.
