Rotary Hears Update On Scouting Changes

Erv Hutter
Erv Hutter, Rotarian and longtime Scout Volunteer, talked to Rotary about recent changes to the organization, the new name, and the admission of female members.

The big change, of course, is the admission of girls to the scouting program and the name change from Boy Scouts of America to just Scouting USA. In truth, the change is not as radical as it might seem.

Sir Robert S.S. Baden-Powell created Boy Scouts in England in 1907 then in 1910 he created Campfire Girls. Socially, in the 1900s, having separate groups was both proper and fitting at the time.

The world of 2019 is entirely different and having girls as members of the "Boy" Scouts is an idea whose time has come. Scouting has always been a family program. In 1960, the Explorer Scouts were added with a focus on careers. In 1960 girls were allowed to join Explorers.

The admission of girls to the general membership is an idea that has been embraced internationally in all but a few countries, most notably the US. In fact, girls have been participating in Boy Scout troops for a number of years. They enjoy activities and learning opportunities. The only restriction was that they could not be registered as members and could not earn rank and merit badges.

The recent change is being seen as a positive move by the majority of people. There are detractors, notably the Girls Scouts, who are suing the Boy Scouts. But overall, it is seen as a good thing. Troops are already being added and the anticipation is that the new co-ed scouts will mean growth.

CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS

The February 12 Board Meeting
will be held a week later

February 19, 2019 before the regular meeting.

The Chamber of Commerce will be holding it's State of the Community program at the Doubletree on February 12, the same time as the Rotary Meeting. Since many members want to attend that meeting, the Board decided to cancel the regular Tuesday Rotary meeting and postpone the monthly Board meeting. Anyone who attends the Chamber event can turn in a Rotary Makeup for the meeting.

A note to all members. Dues invoices for the January to June term have been e-mailed. Please take care of this as soon as possible. If you did NOT receive our invoice, please contact the secretary.

In the day's "Rotary Foundation Minute", Bob Chadwick told the story of the girl who was seen throwing beached starfish into the ocean. When it was pointed out that there were thousands of starfish on the beach, and she could never save them all, she replied ", Yes, but I saved that one". Bob went on to talk about Rotary's work in the Dominican Republic. Like the starfish, the guiding objective of the Rotary Foundation is "One Child, One Family, One Village".
