On a comfortable December night, police officers from across the state assembled at First Presbyterian Church for the 14th annual Project Blue Light service. The packed sanctuary with its beautiful décor was magnificently decorated in holiday greens and lights adding a fitting touch in honoring those that have served us so faithfully over the years.

This event is organized and hosted by the students who are enrolled in the Law Enforcement/Criminal Justice program at the Bay-Arenac ISD Career Center. The Western High School Choir joined in the program adding their vocal talents and presentation enhancing the event.

The evening got started with the Sault Sainte Marie (Ont.) Police Department Honor Guard handling the Presentation of Colors while the Western HS Choir sang both Countries National Anthems.

This year's speaker was Tom Gillman, Coordinator of Police In-Service Training at Delta College and Representative of the Below 100 Initiative. Mr. Gillman is a retired Sergeant with the Bay County Sheriff Department and comes from a family of police officers. Tom's message with the Below 100 Initiative is to develop a safer environment and awareness for police officers so that the number of police officer fatalities in a year is Below 100.

The Western Choir sang "You'll Never Walk Alone" and "Angel" while Brian Ducolon gave special honors to five of Bay City's retired officers who left us this year.

The Wreath Presentation allowed Police Departments from across the state and Canada who were present to step forward and receive a beautiful wreath with a Blue Ribbon honoring all that have served in law enforcement. After a moment of silence, Taps was played with the White Pine Pipes and Drums adding the touching finale to a wonderful and moving service.

All in all, this was a fitting way for us to honor and show our appreciation for all that law enforcement does for our safety and protection. All are encouraged to make a Blue Light and a Blue Ribbon a part of your holiday decorations and make this service a part of next year's holiday season.
