Keith Schnabel of Bay City takes on the role of the ruthless Sen. Joseph Cantwell in Bay City Players production of Gore Vidal's "The Best Man."

While politicians are all over the news, don't expect Bay City Players production of "The Best Man," to mirror real life.

Written by Gore Vidal in the 1960s, director Randall Manetta says the only similarities between the play and real life is "the brazen arrogance it requires to run for the presidency."

"The Best Man" spends more time examining its characters outside of their political views," he said. "While the show focuses on two men seeking their parties nomination for President, I would have difficulty telling you what a number of their stances would be."

Nominated for six Tony Awards, the play pits the highly principled William Russell, ex-Secretary of State, played by Kurt Miller of Bay City, and the ruthless Sen. Joseph Cantwell, played by Keith Schnabel of Bay City.

The message, says Manetta is power is not a toy.

"The play explores where morality and ethics fit in a leadership position," he said. "How much empathy can we exude and still remain tough for the hard choices."

The play is on stage at 8 p.m. March 4, 5, 11, and 12, and 3 p.m. March 6 and 13 of the Players, 1214 Columbus Ave.

Tickets are $18 for adults, $16 for senior citizens and $10 for students, at the box office, or by calling 989-893-5555.
