Any questions about the future of the new Dow-Dow Corning-DuPont merged company in the Great Lakes region are being laid to rest with a new global headquarters project slated for completion in 2017.
It's been 120 years since Herbert H. Dow came to Midland in 1897, attracted by a massive ancient brine basin underlying this area that has proven to be the source of hundreds of profitable chemical products.
"You can't move a chemical plant," a Dow community services representative told the Rotary Club of Bay City recently.
Plus, Dow is currently constructing a new state-of-the-art, six-story global corporate headquarters building to replace the current 2020 Willard H. Dow Center. And, it is using recycled materials including concrete from the old building.
"The building will meet the needs of the Company's Midland employee population and further
demonstrate its strong ties to the Great Lakes Bay Region," said Dow chairman Andrew Liveris.
Dow describes this development as part of a larger, ongoing initiative to support collaboration, company growth, and innovation driven business practices. The new facility within the corporate center campus will include a visitor reception area, customer conference rooms, and a cafeteria with an outdoor patio space overlooking a pond and natural area.
Construction began in Q3 2015 and the building is expected to be occupied and fully operational by the end of 2017. No cost estimates for the project have been released.
Kirco Manix Development, of Troy, project managers, states: "This development is part of a broad, ongoing Company initiative to drive increased collaboration, growth, and innovation-aligned business practices.
"The open-plan design of the building and technology upgrades reflect Dow's focus on engagement and streamlined communication to propel the Company's culture forward. The building's sustainable and adaptable design is further expected to advance employee productivity that will benefit customers and the markets Dow serves."
New Technologies and work environment designs include:
*The latest in audio visual and internet technologies to enhance productivity and innovation;
Flexible office space, meeting rooms, media centers, huddle rooms and break rooms to foster greater collaboration and efficiency;
*Open work environments designed to embrace collaboration and enhance the well-being of employees in the workplace;
*Industry-leading office design standards will be implemented to ensure the most efficient, productive, and cost-effective use of space.
Pretty good news for local economic development folks to start the new year, don't you think?
