All Saints Valiant Effort Comes Up Short in Epic Clash with USA

For the Cougars, Friday's loss was simply a matter of being outgunned; however, it didn't begin that way. With the memory of last years loss to U.S.A. still looming in the back of their minds, the Cougar team and fans were hoping for some just revenge; what they got was a promising first half, and a disappointing end to what could have been a shocking Cougar comeback.

The first set-back of the game was that the Cougars would start out on defense. For a few minutes it seemed as if the Cougars were actually holding back the Patriots; that was when disaster struck. A spectacular run from Patriot #25 Tyler Masse blasted through the Cougars defense and scored the first touchdown of the night. After the Patriots tacked on their two-point-conversion, the Cougars regrouped and began their drive down the field with a great effort put forth from #33 Aaron Janer. Unfortunately, the Patriots defensive squad was rested and ready to go, and soon had the Cougars pinned in a 4th and 3 stranglehold. Rather than punt the ball away, the Cougars decided to go for it. The pass looked good, until it was picked off by USA's Brandon Blitzer #13 and moved down the field ten yards from the Cougar goal line.

Only three minutes after their last score the Patriots slammed in another one to make the score a daunting 14 to nothing. After racking up two more points from another successful conversion, the Patriots gave the ball back to the devastated Cougars. For the last few minutes of the first quarter the Cougars tried to make it happen, but to no avail.

But don't count the Cougars out just yet. The second quarter was owned by the Cougars. The Cougars put everything they had into the second quarter, and it worked. After just five minutes of play the Cougars had racked up 14 points to successfully get back in the game. Before time expired however, the Patriots would connect on one more touchdown to make the score 22-14 and the end of the half.

The second half was full of missed opportunities, fumbles, and fatigue. It was apparent that from the start of the second half that the Cougars had 'nothing left in the tank'. The Cougars tried miserably to hang on, but being out-manned 2-1 had finally taken its toll. Apart from the one time when the Cougars pulled off a safety, the second half belonged to the Patriots - who managed to score two more touchdowns and another conversion. With the score standing at 36-16 the final seconds finally ticked away.

After the game was over Coach Bisel addressed his team saying simply "we just weren't ready". Despite the fact that the Cougars lost, the night was successful for a few Cougars who gave this game everything they had, no matter what the score. One Cougar particularly was Senior Aaron Janer #33 who was on fire during this game; successfully running 226 yards of the Cougars total 344 yards on 15 carries. Janer and the Cougars will return to their home field next week to take on Vassar. With the home crowd behind them, the Cougars will be posed to secure another win.
