John Glenn Survives An Old Fashion Shootout With Escanaba 52-41

From the opening play, this game had all the making for a wide open affair. And to everyone's delight, it was just that.
The game started with Escanaba having the ball on their own 24 yard line. On their first play, quarterback Jordan LeMire threw a swing pass to Paul Wakefield who scampered 76 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead.
John Glenn struck right back with one of their patent power football drives. Starting at their 40, they pounded their way down field. Tyler Clemons scored from 2 yards out to tie the game 7-7.
The Eskimos featured a combination of a power I attack and a stretch offense. They started moving the ball again, but Glenn's defense rose to the occasion and turned the ball over on downs.
Glenn then went back to work and before you knew it, Clemons was punching it in from the two yard line again putting them up 14-7.
Escanaba responded with a drive of their own. Working the ball down field, LeMire connected with speedy Max VandeWiele for a 14 yard touchdown and the two teams were tied, 14-14.

Glenn responded by driving the ball back down the field. But when the Escanaba defense stopped them at the 21, the Bobcats turned to their weapon, Ty Richards. He hit a 38 yard field goal putting the Bobcats up 17-14.
Escanaba continued the slug fest on their next possession. After moving the ball down field, Wakefield busted a 35 yard run and the Eskimos had the lead again, 21-17.
After stopping Glenn on their next possession, the explosive Eskimo offense went at it again. This time Jordan LeMire spotted Mitch VanEffen streaking down the right sidelines and hit him with a 34 yard pass putting them up 28-17.
With time left in the first half, that meant there was time left to score. Starting on their 41, QB Richard Watson rolled right to pass. What the Escanaba defense didn't know is that Watson had slipped the ball to Jordan Schumann as he passed him and Schumann ran 40 yards down to the Escanaba 21. After pounding the ball to the 4 with 49 seconds left, Watson hit Brandon Wrzesinski in the flats for a touchdown to end the first half. Following a 15 yard penalty, Ty Richards hit the extra point from 36 yards out to make it 28-24 at the half.

At the half, Coach Miller decided was the best way to stop the Eskimos offense was to not let them have the ball.
Glenn started the second half with the ball on their 38. Using some passing, Watson hit Wrzesinski on a middle screen and he got good yardage as he kept his balance using his free arm. Later a 14 yard pass to Schumann put the ball on the 13. Then a combination of Clemons and Schumann runs produced another 1 yard Clemons touchdown making it 31-28.
Miller decided that they needed the ball back to keep control of the game. He called for an onside kick that was recovered by the Bobcats on the Escanaba 45. "We worked on that (onside kick) stuff and our kicker is an allstate kicker. We worked on it all year long and we executed it," noted Coach Miller about using the onside kick.
Going back to the pounding rushing attack, Clemons powered a 20 yard gain to the 5. Then Wrzesinski power dove into the end zone for a 38-28 lead.
Using their "weapon" again, Richards pooched the kick between receivers at the 23 seemingly freezing the receiver and they didn't advance the kick from there. On third and 5, Watson came on an outside blitz sacking LeMire at the 17 and forcing a punt. This was the stop they needed.

With the offensive line blowing open big holes against an obviously tired Escanaba line, the Bobcats were on the march again. They used the slip the ball to Schumann play again gaining 14 yards to the Eskimos 18. Soon it was Wrzesinski diving over from the one again and the Bobcats were in a commanding lead, 45-28.
Escanaba wasn't done yet. Paul Wakefield broke another 29 yard run putting the ball on the Glenn 31. Then LeMire hit Thomas Campbell on the 10 and he carried it in for the touchdown bringing Escanaba to within 10, 45-35.
Escanaba pulled off an onside kick of their own recovering the ball at midfield. They quickly moved the ball to the 19 before consecutive penalties moved them back to the 29. Then Watson and Clemons combined to sack LeMire at the 40 and Escanaba was in trouble. Going to the long pass, Schumann intercepted it on the 5 and returned the ball to the 25.
Looking to close out the deal, Glenn started marching back down field. Clemons then returned after a couple play breather and on the very next play, busted it loose for a 25 yard run and a 52-35 lead.
Escanaba finished off the days scoring with a 24 yard touchdown pass from backup QB Max VandeWiele to Mitch VanEffen.
In this slugfest, Glenn totaled 454 total yards to Escanaba's 359. Clemons lead all rushers with 169 yards on 31 carries, with Schumann adding 101 on 7 carries. Paul Wakefield ran for 135 yards on 9 carries while LeMire threw for 170 yards.
"It was a tremendous slugfest," stated a relieved Coach Miller. "We got 93 points on the board it was back and forth that I thought whom ever would have the ball last will win - and we had the ball last so we won."
John Glenn now travels to Petoskey for the district championship. Game day, and time to be announced.
