Passion project is free, open to the public

FREELAND, AUG. 9, 2018 - Aaron C. Rutherford, a recent graduate of Western Michigan University's Musical Theatre Performance program and of John Glenn High School, brings Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" Aug. 23-25 and Aug. 31-Sept. 1.

The shows, which are free and open to the public, will be performed at Saginaw's Imerman Memorial Park on Thursday, Aug. 23 at 7:00 pm; Midland's Plymouth Park Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 25-26; and Bay City's Riverwalk Arboretum on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 31-Sept. 1. Bay City and Midland shows begin at 7:30 pm. Additional dates and locations may be added and all are encouraged to follow The Pop-Up Shakespeare Project on Facebook for up-to-date information. Donations will be accepted.

The show features a cast of 14 child and adult actors, all local.

"I'm super-excited to have such a strong and wonderful group of people join together to create a family-friendly, compelling and accessible means of experiencing theatre and Shakespeare," said Rutherford. "A Midsummer Night's Dream" is probably Shakespeare's best-loved comedy and this production will lay it on heavy with magic tricks and big belly laughs without skimping on the dramatic side of the Bard's play."

While the show will hold true to the original script, the setting has its own distinct twist. "The show is all about love and bringing people together," Rutherford said. "So we've set it in a quasi-Woodstock Summer of Love era, but kid-friendly. More "Brady Bunch" than "Hair."
