Dylan Steele and Craig Windt
Dylan Steele and Central High History teacher Craig Windt, were recently selected, nationally, as one of 15 student / teacher teams to participate in this year's Normandy Institute. The two spoke to Rotary about the experience.

The program is managed by the National History Day Organization All expenses are paid for by philanthropist Albert H. Small.

After being selected, students take 6 months to research a "silent hero" of the D-Day invasion of Normandy. They then spend one week in Washington DC where they participate in workshops and courses at George Washington University. The next week is spent in Normandy where each student presents a eulogy at the grave of his or her selected silent hero.

Selection involves an essay and a personal interview at the local school level. Local winners go on to the National level where the 117 student/teacher winners compete for the 15 winning slots.

The goal of the program is to honor local heroes who gave their lives in WWII, and who are buried or memorialized at Normandy American Cemetery. A website honors these soldiers and a page is created for each researched soldier. The program introduces students to the process of historical research.

"Silent Heroes" are people who have not been researched before. Dylan selected Donald Owen Freidinger who grew up in Linwood, Michigan. Donald worked the family farm and later at Fletcher Oil Co. He graduated from Pinconning High and spent one year at Bay City Junior College (housed in Central High School) before going into the service.

Donald served in Company E, 16th Regiment of the First Infantry Division (the Big Red 1). He left for the war on July 14, 1943, and was killed in action on June 6, 1944. Before dying from a German machine gunshot to the head, he had been wounded multiple times but still managed to take out several German positions.

Dylan and Craig both took turns speaking. Dylan talked about the emotional impact of his research and his visits to Donald's grave site. A video of Dylan's presentation of the eulogy at Donald's marker was played, highlighting the emotion and reverence paid to this Silent Hero.

Dylan is the son of Rich Steele and the grandson of Rotarian Rich Steele.

CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS

The annual Zombie Run needs a new chairperson. As one of several major fundraisers, this event is important to the club. We are already getting inquiries from the public asking what the plans are.

In the "Rotary Foundation Minute", Andreas Teisch, wearing a vest given to him by the Group Study Exchange team from Afghanistan, told how the Rotary Foundation supports Rotary's various exchange programs. From Group Study Exchange, Youth Exchanges, and the new Vocational Group Study Exchange, these programs make the world more peaceful for all.

There are still a couple of openings for board members. If you have an interest in serving, please contact Harvey.

PLEASE NOTE The club must account for all Golf Outing raffle tickets. If you still have tickets, please return them to Tim or to Cindy Chadwick immediately.
