RYLA stands for "Rotary Youth Leadership Award". Each year Rotary clubs select students recommended by their teachers and sponsor them for a week at Camp Rotary near Clare. Last Tuesday Rotary heard the experiences of three of the five students sponsored this year. The other two students will visit an upcoming Rotary program.

RYLA Camp is Rotary's leadership training program for young people. The curriculum covers fundamentals of Rotary's fundamentals of leadership, citizenship and personal growth. The program emphasizes ethics, communications, conflict management, effective leadership as well as what Rotary is to the community.

Each of the RYLA students talked about their experiences at Camp and told about some of the highlights. Most significantly was the opportunity to meet students from other areas, schools and backgrounds.

The presentations and comments quickly showed the positive attitudes of the girls as well as their ability to speak to a group. They all thanked the club and said how important it is to continue sending young people to these camps.

CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS

The board meets this week
April 14 at 11:00 before the regular meeting.
Everyone is welcomed.

President Brenda Scramlin presided at the first meeting of her term. Brenda's theme will the Rotary 101. Among her plans are for the club to recite the Four-Way Test each week. Our guests from RYLA helped with that today.

Frank Janca was the greeter. Brenda asked him to tell the club a little about the duties of greeter, which includes greeting everyone, collecting guest slips and introducing those guests, and "getting everyone in a good mood".

Wendy Dore spoke briefly about the upcoming "ZOMBIE RUN" to be held on October 10. The event looks to be a lot of fun and the committee is putting together many events.

Brenda invited everyone to meet her in Wenonah Park at 6:15 each Wednesday evening for a Rotary Wednesday Walkout. The objective is to be ready for the October 10 Zombie Walk. Walks will start easy. The plan is to be able to eventually walk from the park, across Vet's Bridge, through the West Side, back across Liberty Bridge and return to the park. Don't miss it!

The district will hold a dinner at the Doubletree on July 9. The outgoing District Governor will pass the gavel to the new Governor. Cost will be $35 per person and everyone is welcome.

Cindy Chadwick, chief Sargent at Arms is looking for assistants. If you're interested, see her.

Nancy Greve has ordered a supply of magnetic Rotary Pins. These will be available at the next meeting. Steve Kent keeps a supply of regular pins if anyone needs to replace a lost pin or just wants an extra or two.
