Launch Detroit Video Screened At Rotary

September 22, 2015
By: Stephen Kent

Member Andreas Teich presented two videos to the club on Tuesday.

The first video was a facebook post about a Rotary group placing latrines in a Dominican Republic village. "Since we fund this stuff I thought it would fun to see the results." The video was in Spanish, but the pictures of several trucks arriving, each with two prefab latrines on board, showed the scope of what is done.

The local Rotary clubs in the DR identify the project. The contact District 6310 officials in Michigan who put together the funding. The locals in the DR prepare the sites and take care of the installation.

The second video was about the LaunchDETROIT, a micro-loan program developed by Rotary District 6400. According to the web site, LaunchDETROIT "strives to develop successful entrepreneurs, especially women, who have limited access to financial and business resources."

The video interviewed several people and talked about their dreams and how the LaunchDETROIT program gives them the ability to make a go of it. For those who are interested, the full video is on the easy to use web site.

As Andreas said in closing "This is one of the things that makes me proud to be a part of Rotary."

President Brenda called for volunteers to help with the Running Dead Zombie Race to be held October 10. "We need 100 people to hand out water, sign people up, tell people where to go, and some to be zombies and jump out to scare runners."

Bob Chadwick said that "Goodie Bags" will be passed out to runners. If you have anything that could be put in bags like that, please let him know.

Thanks to Maier & Associates for their major sponsorship of the Running Dead race. That is a huge step toward a successful event.

Trevor Keyes updated the club on Vocational Day coming November 10. If you can help, please sign up.

Ed Clements gave an update on the Dictionary and thesaurus deliveries.

Members are reminded of the new fun event called "Rotary Night Out At the Brewery". This will be on September 30 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the Tri-City Brewing Company, 3020 N. Water St. The Gypsy Wagon Band will provide entertainment and there will be free snacks to compliment the many types of beer and soft drinks you can purchase. This is a time to relax and kick up your heels and get to know fellow Rotarians in a very relaxed setting.

The Club will MEET OFF-SITE at the Depot on October 6 and 27. The ad hoc meeting location committee is in the process of reviewing our current meeting location. This occasional review was suggested the last time the club moved. If you have comments or suggestions, please contact Brenda Scramlin.

Members are encouraged to bring correct change for lunches and 50/50 tickets. Please don't expect the ticket table staff to make change for a $100 bill.
