Rotary Hears About Hospice Volunteer Opportunities

April 19, 2016
By: Stephen Kent

Dee Ann Bliss
Dee Ann Bliss, Volunteer Coordinator for SouthernCare Hospice, spoke to Rotary about volunteer opportunities with her organization. Southern Care of Saginaw is an affiliate of Curo Health Services. They offer hospice care, with clinical excellence to patients and families in fourteen states.

SouthernCare's stated goal is to "enrich the quality of life as life?s journey nears its completion. Through supportive, loving, comfort care we offer patients and their families comfort for body, mind and spirit."

Volunteers are a significant part of SouthernCare's services. Medicare provides hospice as a service to anyone needing it. Medicare mandates require 5% of services be provided by volunteers.

All volunteers are trained by SouthernCare. This includes CPR training. As a rule, volunteers provide no health care to patients. Rather, they provide the human touch that everyone needs at the end of life. Some patients have family to provide this contact, volunteers are available to others.

Volunteers generally provide just a few hours a week and are usually assigned to one patient at a time. Other volunteers fulfill larger roles to more patients.

Volunteer services vary widely. They can include just visiting, or reading. Some do various activities including things like sewing and knitting. Dee gave the example of a patient who enjoyed singing in church choir. A volunteer with a similar interest was selected and sang with the patient.

Dee said that volunteers are always needed and that serving in this capacity is a reward for both the patient and the volunteer.
