Assisted Living and Memory Care Consultant Speaks to Rotary

Member Bonnie Marsh introduced speaker John Czarnecki
, a long time consultant to the Assisted Living provider community and a partner in New Hope Bay, a new assisted living and memory care facility opening in Bay City.
Czarnecki said that many people think of Assisted Living as the place that takes care of Gramma and Grampa. Their first real exposure is usually when these grown children realize that something has to be done and they start looking. Too often they come to visit a facility but have no idea what questions to ask.
Assisted Living is essentially the ability to live in an apartment, in a qualified facility, where round the clock care is available and all services are provided. The level of care depends on the condition of the clients. In cases of dementia or Alzheimer, "memory care" comes into play.
For any facility, space is a major consideration and one of the things people complain about first. Czarnecki is a proponent of providing as large a unit as possible. His New Hope Bay facility boast apartments larger than most.
A second point was barriers to adequate care. Clients are assessed before acceptance and that dictates the services to be provided. Everyone has good days and bad days so the client's loved ones should pay close attention to the assessment. Czarnecki is a proponent of "all inclusive" pricing, which only about 20% of facilities offer. Ala carte pricing, although more common, may not provide the best care results.
Finally, Czarnecki talked about value. Pricing is based on the size of the unit, the level of care required, and other factors. In his case, with all-inclusive pricing, rates start in the $3,995 per month range and go up based on other factors.

CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS
The club met in the restaurant area of the Doubletree this week. The staff did a good job of arranging the room to the best advantage for the meeting.
The club Board met prior to the regular meeting and President Brenda reviewed the major topics of the meeting for the club.
Both the proposed club budget and club foundation budgets were reviewed. An adjustment was made to the anticipated number of members for the year and the budget will be revised. The foundation will be raising the community grant from $10,000 a year to $14,000. Tim Holsworth will be passing the board presidency to Ed Keating.
The club president, starting next term, will be asked to always apply for matching grants from the district. That has usually, but not always, been done in the past.
It was noted that both RI and District dues will be increasing annually over the next few years. Those increases will be passed through to members. For the cycle about to be billed (July - December), there will be no change.
Recent fundraisers have been earmarked for specific uses, such as for the Bay City Schools. In the future, a percentage may be so designated, but the rest will be kept in the foundation to fund items such as the community grants.
In other business, the Zombie Run will be returning this year. Planning is just starting and the location has not been confirmed.
The Doubletree contract has been signed for the next period. A complete schedule plus a menu plan is posted each week at the front table.
"Birds Of A Feather"
, the 2016 Rotary Rocks concert raised approximately $3,100. Everything was down a little this year, but the concert was still considered a success. A plaque is going to be given to Kunio Oulette and his elementary school class designating them "Community Partners". The board approved an additional $100 share of the gate to be used in their classroom.
The next Rotary Night Out
is scheduled for Wednesday, May 25, 6:30pm, at Old City Hall. The cost will be $21.99 plus tax and tips for a full dinner (prime rib or artichoke chicken) and a cash bar. Sign up now for a great night of food and fellowship. There's a limit of 50 people so reservations are required.
The district conference is next week. There is still a little time to participate in the Bay City Basket for the auction, but that time is running out. Talk to Brenda or Cindy Luczak.
The Club Golf Outing
is scheduled for June 16, 2016, at Maple Leaf Golf Course. Registration is at 7:30am with a shotgun start at 9:00am. Cost is $75 per person with net proceeds going to technology upgrades for Bay City Public Schools. Tim Holsworth read the names of sponsors and announced that raffle tickets are being sold for the 49 inch, LG smart TV.
