2016-17 Rotary President Presents Plans For Year
July 12, 2016
By: Stephen Kent
, President for the 2016-17 term, presided over her first official Rotary Meeting of the year.
After the usual business, her program outlines some of the goals and aspirations she's like to see for the club this year under the new annual Rotary theme "Rotary Serving Humanity"
Top on Andrea's list is the celebration of the 100th year of the Rotary Foundation. In honor of the occasion, birthday cupcakes were on all tables. In 1913, Art Klumph was president of the Cleveland, Ohio Rotary club. He advocated for the club to build a reserve that would ensure a means to do future good works. As President of Rotary International in 1916-17, he proposed his idea at the Atlanta RI convention. That idea and his desire to good in the world eventually became the Rotary International Foundation.
The Foundation grew slowly over its first years. By 1978 it had only received $2 million in contributions. At that time the direction and promotion changed and today the Foundation has assets of over one billion dollars.
Andrea went on to outline many of the impacts of the foundation throughout the world. In 2014-15 alone, over $25 Million was given through district grants and another $68 million in global grants.
In the coming year, our club will emphasize the Foundation. Events and activities include:
EREY: Every Rotarian Every Year
Maintaining our club's 100% of members being Paul Harris Fellows
Circulating the "Polio Plus Jar" at weekly meetings with the slogan
"The change in your pocket can change lives"
Promotion of Centennial Humanitarian Literacy Projects.
A new Global project will be to help restore school libraries in the Philippines where Typhoon Haiyan destroyed or damaged so many libraries. Our club will have a friendly competition with the Morning Rotary in this effort. The winner will receive baked goods for their club.
The club will also join the Morning Club, the Pinconning Club, and the Bay County Library system in a project called "Little Free Libraries". Under the chairmanship of Kevin Ayala, small neighborhood libraries will be set up in residential areas. Anyone will be invited to pick up a book or drop one off.
Other initiatives include bestowing a Paul Harris fellowship on a non-Rotarian in the community who exemplifies "Service Above Self". Our new Fellow, along with those from the other 32 clubs in the district will be honored at the annual Foundation Gala. This will be chaired by Connie Schweitzer.
Andrea concluded her remarks by invoking this year's theme of "Rotary Serving Humanity".
She then listed the club officers and board and the many committees of the club. She finished by showing the inspirational video "Be The Change".
