Rotary Meets At Planetarium

October 25, 2016
By: Stephen Kent

Mike Murray
Mike Murray, hosted Rotary for an off-site meeting at the Delta College Planetarium. Following the regular meeting, the club assembled under the Planetarium dome where Murray talked about what the Planetarium does and then presented a show that outlined the features of the Planetarium and the programs planned for the coming few months.

It's important to know that the Planetarium is more than just a sky show. The building incorporates a number of classrooms as well as the Explorer's Hall multipurpose room, where Rotary had lunch today.

The Planetarium site has historical roots that go back to the 1860s. The first major building on the site was the Fraser House. Built in 1860's it was a very well known hotel in Bay City's history. After that hotel burned in December of 1906, the famous Wenonah Hotel was built on the property and became an icon of the city in the days of luxury hotels. That Hotel burned in December 1977 after which the property served as a parking lot for 20 years.

When the Challenger Space Shuttle was lost, NASA created the Challenger Grants to fund projects around the country. Delta College was able to use a grant of some nine million dollars to built the Planetarium Learning Center in the early 1990's.

The Planetarium has evolved from it's first days that featured automated slide projectors all around the perimeter. Today the dome has a state of the art digital projection system that can display the sky as well as any number of digital shows and movies.

Murray began his presentation with scenes of the construction of the Planetarium and the downtown area. He went on to show the night sky in ways that nobody can see from the typical, light polluted, city. The show zoomed into constellations and features in distant parts of the sky and combined Hubble space telescope images with artists presentations of those features as they might be seen from space.

The club was also treated to trailers from a couple of upcoming shows. Features include "Gateway to the Stars", "The Dark Matter Mystery", "Perseus and Andromeda", and "The Wayfinders".

CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS

The club wished a happy birthday to members who celebrated a birthday in the month of October.

Dee Dee Wacksman reminded the club to keep thinking about the International Convention coming up next June.

Lee Newton reported on World Polio Day and the members who came to the live stream event at the State Theatre. He noted that due to a large amount of money raised by out club (over $2,100), the Morning Rotary asked for the contest to be extended a week to see if they might catch up, at least a little!

Members were asked to sign up to order Holiday cards from Rotary asking for donations to the Polio cause. Donations will be matched by RI.

Vocational Day is this week, November 1. We expect over 160 students to be in attendance. Let's have a good turnout of members.
