Rotary Hears About 2-1-1 Phone Service

If you have a question, they have an asnwer

Sarah Kile
You know that for emergencies you call 9-1-1. But if you just need to find a service, or assistance, or almost anything else, what do you do. In the past, we grabbed our handy phone book and checked the yellow pages first. But the world has changed. Those good old phone books are no longer around. We're expected to "check the web"... not the friendliest resource around.

Fortunately there is a quick and easy resource for the majority of questions: Just dial 2-1-1.

Sarah M. Kile, Executive Director, spoke to Rotary about the local 2-1-1 service. As mandated by law, 2-1-1 is available almost everywhere. The service is funded by the United Way has trained experts on hand 24-7. They have resources and a database at their fingertips that allows them to answer most questions or at least point the caller in the right direction.

An analysis of the types of calls coming into 2-1-1 in Bay County shows that Food and Meals account for the most calls. That is followed by utilities, "other", housing, and personal needs. Bay County is one of the first areas to see food and meals move above utilities, and that may be significant.

In the first half of 2017, the 2-1-1 call center has handled over 2,300 calls. As the services outreach expands that number is likely to rise. Individuals are encouraged to promote the service to anyone they know. If your organization provides services, call 2-1-1 and register with the service to be in the database.

One parting message from Sarah was "No more resource guides!!!". Too often well-meaning organizations put resources on their websites only to let them get out of date. 2-1-1 is a central site that is constantly updated and provided a one-stop resource for anyone.

For more information just call 2-1-1. If you want to try the 2-1-1 database yourself get on your computer and go to www.mi211.org
