Team Paws, And Their Service Dogs, Present Rotary Program

June 27, 2017
By: Stephen Kent

Meet Andy, the Service Spaniel
Representatives of the 30+ member Team Paws presented a short program and talked about the four-year-old program. Team Paws is the recipient of one of Rotary's Community Grants this cycle.

Team Paws was started by teacher Karrie Marciniak who, sitting with her own dog in her lap, thought "How can I help kids grow into more effective and confident readers?". Looking down at her dog she says "And then... viola, an idea!". Team Paws is now in its fourth year of developing effective readers and engaging kids in volunteerism.

Team Paws is on a mission to
change the world with kindness!

"Paws" is a literacy-based program that brings therapy dogs into schools to listen to students read. Paws also offers a variety of opportunities for volunteerism. The main focus is to spread kindness.

Among its activities, the Team takes service-related trips to assisted living facilities and related places. It collects items for the homeless and sick, promotes literacy awareness and takes a stand against bullying. Above all the team "smiles, says kind words, holds the door, and says please and thank you!"

"Paws goes where they are needed", said Marciniak. "My main focus is to grow youngsters who understand the importance of giving back through volunteerism."
