Rotary Hears Boys & Girls Club Update

January 16, 2018
By: Stephen Kent

Dorothy Dean
Dorothy Dean, Director of Resource Development for the Boys and Girls Club, spoke to the club about her organization and its programs.

The Boys Club of Bay City opened its doors in 1957 under the supervision of the Police Department. In 1991, Boys Clubs of America changed their name to Boys & Girls Clubs, allowing girls to join the membership. Today the local club runs six area units and has almost 3,000 members. The units are Bay City (1957), Essexville (2000), Pinconning (2000), Saginaw (2011), Carrollton (2011) and KidsCampUs located in the YMCA of Saginaw (2017).

With the slogan "Young people who need us most PLUS outcome-driven club experience EQUALS Priority outcomes", the clubs strive for an impact on the youth they serve.

Success is derived from five key elements: Fun, A safe and positive environment, supportive relationships, opportunities and expectations, and recognition.

Among the various programs is "Education and Career Development" which includes a "Power Hour" that provides tutoring and homework help, "Summer Brain Games" to help youth not fall behind when school is out, "DIY STEM" to provide STEM experiences to youth who might not otherwise do this, "Make the Promise to Graduate" which encourages students to stick with it!

Summer programs provide free breakfast and lunches to youth in the community. In 2017 the club served 9,109 breakfasts and 18,876 lunches.

Membership in the club is $25/year per child. Scholarship assistance is available for those students who need it. The club has a number of field trips and other programs, most of which are free. Community support helps make these programs possible.
