FEATURING THE TRINITY CHOIR AND NICHOLAS SCHMELTER, ORGANIST (4:00 PM)

Trinity Episcopal Church in Bay City will offer Choral Evensong for the
community on Sunday, May 20, 2018, at 4:00 p.m. to celebrate the Day of
Pentecost. Evensong is made up of hymns, scripture readings, prayers, organ
music, canticles and an anthem. Much of the service is sung by the choir and the
Hymns for the service include "Praise the Spirit In Creation" (Julian) by David
Hurd, (b. 1950), "O Spirit of the Living God" (Melcombe) by Samuel Webbe
(1740-1816), and "O Spirit of Life" (O Heiliger Geist) from Geistliche
The anthem is "Come Down, O Love Divine" by English composer William Harris
(1883-1971). Harris was the organist at St. George's Chapel, Windsor and was also
Queen Elizabeth II's music teacher. The canticles are the "Evening Service" ( Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis) by French composer Charles Gounod
(1818-1893). Psalm 145 (Exaltabo te, Deus) will be sung by the cantor and choir
to Tone V.1.
Organ music for the service is "Versets Sur le 'Veni Creator" by André Fleury
(1903-1995), "Chorale Prelude on 'Down Ampney" by Herbert Sumsion
(1899-1995), and Komm, Gott, Schöpfer, Heiliger Geist, BWV 667
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750).
Participants are Reverend Susan Rich, officiant; Matthew Smith, acolyte; Nicholas Schmelter, organist; Brad Wiechelman, cantor; Mary K. Freel, lector; The Trinity Choir; and Robert Sabourin, director.
The Christian holiday of Pentecost, which is celebrated on the seventh Sunday
(49 days) after Easter commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the
Apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ while they were in Jerusalem
celebrating the Feast of Weeks, as described in the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 2:1-
31). Some Christians believe this event represents the birth of the Catholic
The holy day is also called "White Sunday" or "Whitsunday", especially in The United Kingdom, where traditionally the next day, Whit Monday, was also a
public holiday (now fixed by statute on the last Monday in May). In Germany
Pentecost is denominated of "Pfingsten" and often coincides with scholastic
holidays and the beginning of many outdoor and springtime activities, such as
festivals and organized outdoor activities by youth organizations. The Monday
after Pentecost is a legal holiday in many European nations.
The service is open to the public free of charge. Trinity Episcopal Church is
located at 815 N Grant Street on the corner of Grant and Center Avenue. Barrier-free
access is from the church parking lot on the west side of the building. The
