David L. Eisler began his career as a music professor. His undergraduate degree was in music as a clarinetist. He later received his masters from Yale. Today Eisler is the president of Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan. He is also a "long time Rotarian".

Located in Big Rapids, Ferris offers a full program including masters and doctorate programs. Unlike many universities, Ferris continues to offer an associate degree program. Besides the Big Rapids campus, the university offers programs in 26 other locations and partners with a number of community colleges including Delta College.

Ferris is known for its very high placement rate among graduates. 74 of it's programs boast 100% placement of graduates. The university has 1,500 graduates last year. That number required five separate commencement ceremonies.

The College of Pharmacy at Ferris is the largest in the State and the 12th largest in the nation with about 600 students. Over 800 students applied to the program last year and 150 were accepted. According to Eisler, the Ferris program cost half what many colleges charge.

Ferris partners with colleges like Delta here in the Saginaw Valley to provide programs past the community college level. Students have a path which allows them to complete their bachelor degree at the local college in several fields. When asked how that works, Eisler says that some programs are staffed by Ferris faculty who travel to the partner schools, some local faculty is used.

Eisler said that the challenge for higher education is to predict where the jobs will be in the future. Where traditional degrees came out of a department and had that name, today's degree is given an emphasis which often crosses discipline lines.
