Shelly Prieur poses with her son, Tyler, on Thanksgiving Day.

Seven years ago, while working as an associate at Meijer, a dentist from Bay City approached Shelly Prieur and blatantly told her, "That mole on your neck is Melanoma, get it checked out". She did and it was. That is where the battle of her life began.

The cancerous mole was removed.

"We were hopeful" said Shelly, looking down at the table, "That would be the end of this nightmare".

Two months ago however, Shelly felt a lump on her stomach. Remembering her past brush with cancer, Shelly learned to take things seriously, but never did she imagine, that this lump would prove to be connected to the mole she had removed seven years prior.

After a series of doctor visits and a battery of tests, it was determined that indeed, her cancer had not only returned, but with a vengeance.

Shelly is now being treated at the Multidisciplinary Melanoma Clinic (MMC) at the University of Michigan. The MMC is an internationally recognized resource providing a multidisciplinary approach to treatment and care of Melanoma patients.

The number of new cases of Melanoma continues to rise faster than any other type of human cancer. Melanoma represents the most common type of cancer in the state of Michigan for women ages 25-29 and men ages 25-44.

Melanoma may spread from skin cancer to other parts of the body primarily through the lymph system to the lymph nodes. If a Melanoma cell breaks loose, it can become trapped in the lymph nodes and at some point, grow into a lump, which is usually when cancers that spread become detected.

After Shelly and her husband carefully examined their options for treatment, it was decided that she will begin her first round of Chemotherapy Monday, November 26, 2007. The treatment She will endure is the strongest treatment available today for Melanoma patients - High Dose IL2. This treatment is FDA approved, yet extremely toxic.

There will be a fundraiser in Shelly's honor hosted by her friend, Michelle Michalski owner of Sweet Dreams Fundraising at Bay Lanes in Bay City on Sunday, December 9th from Noon to 4:00pm. This will be a 9 pin, No-Tap bowling event with a potluck dinner and auction. Tickets for the tournament are $20 which includes dinner. Prizes are $200 for 1st place, $100 for 2nd place and $50 for 3rd. Potluck dinner and auction tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under.

Last Friday, November 16th, her employer Meijer held a fundraiser at their Essexville location for Shelly offering a luncheon and baked goodies.

Editor's Note: Our reporter would like to share with MyBayCity readers that she interviewed Shelly and her family on Thanksgiving Day. She left this particular interview feeling extremely thankful for not only what she does have, but also for what she does not. All of us here at MyBayCity wish Shelly and her family the best through what will most certainly be a difficult road for her and her beautiful family.
