THE STORY OF FATHER'S DAY:

Mrs. John B. Dodd, of Washington, first proposed the idea of a "father's day" in 1909. Mrs. Dodd wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart. William Smart, a Civil War veteran, was widowed when his wife (Mrs. Dodd's mother) died in childbirth with their sixth child. Mr. Smart was left to raise the newborn and his other five children by himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington state. It was after Mrs. Dodd became an adult that she realized the strength and selflessness her father had shown in raising his children as a single parent.

The first Father's Day was observed on June 19, 1910 in Spokane Washington.

At about the same time in various towns and cities across American other people were beginning to celebrate a "father's day.".

In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father's Day. Finally in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day.

Father's Day has become a day to not only honor your father, but all men who act as a father figure. Stepfathers, uncles, grandfathers, and adult male friends are all honored on Father's Day.

MyBayCity.com would like to extend our gratitude for all who sent in your Father's Day Essay Nominations! Congratulations to the below winners and Happy Father's Day to all!

My dad is the worlds greatest for more reasons than I can name. He is not only a fabulous father and "opa" (grandpa), but he is the kind of person I strive to be more like every day. The love and respect I have for my dad can not be measured.

As a German immigrant at the age of 14, he has called Bay City his home for the majority of his life. He has had many struggles to build a life for himself and his family and has succeeded greatly. He has been a local business owner for over 40 years and has put hard work and pride into everything he has done. He has built a wonderful marriage with our mom for 41 years and raised two strong, independent daughters.

I was so proud when my husband commented that my dad makes him want to be a better person. He has that affect on everyone he meets. He is a kind and generous soul and the love he shows for all of us makes my heart overflow.

I love you dad! more than words can say and that will NEVER change.

My father is one of a kind. He's very caring and is always there when needed most. Growing up I was always a daddy's girl and wanted to always be by his side.

I've learned many valuable lessons from my father through the years, starting from a young age. In 2001, my father had a brain aneurysm and was very close to losing his life. That brought everything into perspective and made me realize just how much of an importance he is in my life. It made me appreciate everything in my life too. I'm thankful for my father each Father's Day because I can't imagine life without him.

Through all the ups and downs I know he will always be there for me. I feel very fortunate to have a wonderful relationship with my father. He's the best!

I honestly couldn't ask for a better father than the one I already have. To the world he may be one person but to one person he is the world. My father is everything to me!

I love it when we go skiing or camping. It's our time to escape the city and relax for a weekend together. My father is a fantastic artist also. He paints murals (big paintings) around the cities of Essexville and Bay City.

If you wanted to know how to spell "FANTASTIC FATHER", then thats an easy one. ROBERT AWREY III!
