Opening Ceremonies for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing were held on the 8th day of the 8th month and will continue for 18 days!

This week began on a sour note for organizers of the highly anticipated Opening Ceremony of the 2008 Olympics toward the Media.

A Korean Media outlet reportedly gained access to Beijing's National Stadium and taped Monday's rehearsal of the opening ceremonies for the Olympic Games. This source reportedly leaked footage onto YouTube, infuriating Olympic organizers, who have worked diligently to keep details of the highly anticipated gala a secret.

However, when it came time for the "real thing" Friday, China "wowed the world" with the spectacular event!

China invited the world to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games on Friday, if not present, through their television screens. The roll of thunder from two thousand drums and a battering of fireworks from the Forbidden City and Tienanmen Square to the National Stadium.

The Opening Ceremony began with a countdown in the Beijing dusk air. Then a roar of thunder came from the floor of the National Stadium where 2,008 drummers beat an ancient Chinese percussion instrument.

Drummers repeated over and over, "Friends have come from afar, how happy we are." This phrase comes from the work of Confucius (551 BC-479 BC), one China's most important educators and thinkers.

Fourteen thousand performers offered the 91,000 people in the National Stadium, popularly known as the 'Bird's Nest,' a history lesson in China's contribution to world civilization.

Spectators that arrived for opening ceremonies held the first of some seven million tickets to the 2008 Beijing Games, in which nearly 11,000 athletes will jump, run, cycle, fight, swim, sail, ride and shoot their way to the Olympic Gold!

The Opening Ceremony concluded with magnificent fireworks staged by a crew of 600 engineers from locations around the city, even as far away as the Great Wall of China!

Opening Ceremonies were held on 8th day of the 8th month of 2008, the 18-day-long Olympic Games will take place in 37 different venues, and will award a grand total of 302 Olympic medals to the winning athletes.
