State Representative Jeff Mayes (D-Bay City)

State Representative Jeff Mayes (D-Bay City) joined the state House today and adopted a plan to establish the second week of October as "Michigan Harvest for Michigan Kids Week." The plan aims to educate children about Michigan's farms and encourage the consumption of more Michigan-grown products.

"Good nutrition is a key building block for our children's health, growth, and academic performance," Mayes said. "By connecting our children to our farms, we will develop their appreciation for delicious, nutritious and smart food choices early in life. We can also enhance the learning experience by having farmers visit our classrooms and have kids visit our local farms so they can see how Michigan agriculture and the food system work."

Agriculture is Michigan's second largest industry, employing over 1 million Michigan residents and boasting an annual economic impact over $60 billion. Expanding market opportunities for Michigan farmers will preserve and strengthen local food production and further increase the already significant contribution that agriculture makes to the state's economy.

Michigan Harvest for Michigan Kids Week will be held October 5-11. The collaboration between teachers, food service staff, and local food and agriculture professionals during the week will help provide students with a greater appreciation of our state's natural resources.

"Michigan Harvest for Michigan Kids Week is a great way to bring our agricultural industry into the classroom," Mayes said. "This special week will enrich our children's learning experience and help them move toward a healthier lifestyle. It will also provide Michigan farmers with a valuable new market for their products, which will boost the local economy and strengthen ties in the community."
