Demolition has begun!

Dore & Associates Contracting has donated the demolition of two buildings used by the former Labadie auto dealership on Washington Avenue, just south of City Hall for the future site of the state of the art facility for Bay Area Family Y!

Demolition will take approximately one week to haul concrete and debris off the property. Dore's in-kind donation not only includes demolition of the old buildings but also removal of old concrete pads and asphalt, improving the aesthetics of the site. Once this is completed the property will be ready for construction.

Ground breaking for the new facility is slated to take place early this Fall. The Bay Area Family Y is currently in the process of getting bids from contractors. Once the contractor has been chosen the facility will be underway!

Dore has offered the demolition as a gift to the community and its youth, as well as an economic stimulus effort to help Bay City during tough economic times. He's encouraging other contractors to offer in-kind donations of their services to the Y.

The services he is providing hold a value of approximately $125,000 - the largest in-kind gift from a contractor received in the history of the Bay Area Y.

Dore states, "I am doing this for the kids of Bay City and that is truly why this project is so important for the future of the Bay Area."

"We are very excited about getting things rolling in a way that the community can actually "see" what's taking place. Until this point all the planning and fundraising has been taking place behind the scenes. We have begun our Community Phase of our fundraising campaign and are building teams of people to assist in the large task of contacting businesses and individuals in the area for their support. We will be having a formal kick-off to this phase of our campaign the end of this month," says Rebecca Kaiser, Communication & Development Representative for the Bay Area Y.

To date they have raised almost $10 million! Donations can be made online at Bay Area Family Y Website or by mail to the Bay Area Family Y 111 N. Madison Ave, Bay City, MI 48708.

Chuck Brooks, executive director of the Bay Area Family Y is scheduled to give an update to the community on the status of the Y project on Tuesday. He is the guest speaker for the Bay Area Chamber of Commerce's "Eye Opener Breakfast" at 7:30 a.m. at The Kingfish Restaurant & Tiki Lounge, 1019 N. Water St. in downtown Bay City.

Brooks said the schedule calls for ground to be broken on the new Y later this year.

YMCA officials are finalizing the purchase of the property from the Great Lakes Center Foundation for $500,000. The 3.5-acre parcel sits between 10th and 11th streets and between Washington and Saginaw streets
