Friday Mayes Will Join Officials From DTE Energy in Detroit
State Representative Jeff Mayes (D-Bay City) on Friday will join officials from DTE Energy in Detroit for a tour and briefing on the growing problem of energy theft.
"Energy theft hurts everyone," Mayes said. "It's not just an urban problem; it also affects suburban and rural communities and it must be stopped. Our hard-working families must be protected from this criminal activity that not only increases energy rates, but puts our residents and communities in harm's way."
Mayes is Chair of the House Energy and Technology Committee. State Senator Bruce Patterson (R-Canton), who is Chair of the Senate Energy Committee, is also scheduled to attend the briefing.
Energy theft in the DTE Energy service area and across Michigan has recently been on the rise due to rising energy costs and the overall effect of the deepening economic crisis. Instances of energy theft include the stealing of natural gas and electricity from residential and commercial properties through illegal hook-ups, which could lead to an explosion, fire or electrocution.
"Stealing energy is not only unfair to rate payers, it is extremely dangerous," Mayes said. "I am committed to learning more about this illegal, even deadly, problem and working with energy providers, Legislators and residents to look for ways to curtail energy theft in our communities."
