Are you or someone you know facing an economic challenge? The Bay Area Family Y wants to make sure you still have access to their facilities as a way to reduce stress, be with others, and help to improve you own personal fitness, especially during times of stress such as job loss.

The Bay Area Family Y Executive Director/CEO Chuck Brooks announced recently a special membership program for people who find them selves laid off from their job. Brooks stated, "This program is not only a good thing for the Y to do, but fulfills the basic focus of the mission of the Y in our community and is the right thing for us to do to help people of our community."

Effective immediately, individuals who find themselves laid off through no fault of their own will be eligible to enroll themselves, as well as their families, as members of the Bay Area Family Y.

Membership Fees for these individuals, their family and single parent family memberships have been reduced to nearly one third the regular membership price and the joining fee will be waived. Memberships will be granted for 3 months at a time when the individual's membership will be reviewed and extended if they continue to be laid off from work.

To enroll, the individual will have to show proof of layoff and sign an affidavit, as well as complete the regular membership enrollment form.

Individuals who cannot afford even these reduced membership fees will be able to apply for an even greater scholarship amount through their regular financial assistance program.

"Throughout the history of our organization, the Bay Area Family Y has been committed to making sure all its programs and services are available to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay program and membership fees," states Brooks.

In 2008, the Bay Area Family Y provided $646,927 in services to individuals and families in need representing 2010 individuals. These services include $151,999 in program and membership scholarships representing 384 individuals. This represents a 76% increase in scholarships over 2007.

The Y also provided $5,926 representing 1482 visits by neighborhood youth to use the Y a no charge. These passes are distributed by the Neighborhood Resource Center.

The YMCA Scholarship Program and Neighborhood Pass Program are supported through funds provided by the United Way of Bay County, as well as the various fund raising activities of the Y including the Annual Diamonds and Roses Gala, 4th of July Parking Program, Annual Strong Kids Campaign, and contributions received from local individuals and businesses.

In addition, the Y provides the GSRP school readiness program to 144 eligible 4 year olds funded through a grant from the Michigan Department of Education.

"The Board and employees are not just proud of the many programs and activities that we provide on a daily basis at the Y, we are particularly proud of our commitment that our programs and activities are available to everyone," said Brooks.
