Bay City State Recreation Area Offering Summer Exploring Nature Programs

The Department of Natural Resources would like to encourage Mid-Michigan families to "Get Outdoors" and explore the natural treasures found within one of Michigan's National Registered Landmarks---Bay City State Recreation Area!

Tuesday, June 16 marks the kick off for this summer's weekly interpretive Exploring Nature program series at Bay City State Recreation Area. Each week a new outdoor adventure awaits you and your family through these hands-on explorations and activities. There is something new and different to try each week. Admission to park programs is free, but a state park motor vehicle permit is required for vehicle entrance into the park: $6.00 daily, $24.00 annual, $6.00 senior annual permit.

Children can earn a free Wetlands Jr. Ranger Patch by attending any 6 programs this summer!

The following programs are scheduled for July 28-Aug 1

Tuesday, July 28

6:00PM-8:30PM Fishing in the Park: Splash into Michigan's hottest pass-time and take a friend fishing! They supply the poles and bait, free of charge! Diver's License required for fishing pole check-out. Prize for the best catch of the evening. Kids can take part in a different Angler Challenge activity each week, designed to teach and improve the basic skills of fishing. This week: Learn how to tie 4 fishing knots and what they are best used for. Meet at the Fishing Dock on Tobico Lagoon.

Wednesday, July 29

10:30AM, Wetland Friends Adventure Hour: Find out why bobcats are special and why they need wetlands to survive through stories, games, craft and outdoor exploration! Meet at the Visitor Center.

1PM, Play by the Bay: Add a little nature to your play date! Ducks, Geese & Swans! is the theme of this week's program. Learn about their special adaptations, where to watch for them, and then make a waterfowl kite to fly by the bay! Fun, informative, inspirational and educational activities. Meet at the "Play by the Bay" Playground.

Thursday, July 30

10:30AM, Outdoor Explorers: An outdoor adventure designed for kids 3rd-6th grade! New Wildlife focus each week sure to "Leave No Child Left Inside"! Incorporates use of outdoor exploration equipment and fun make and take projects. Meet at the visitor center. This week's theme: Marsh Ducks & Wood Ducks

1:30PM, Archery in the Parks: Learn or perfect an enjoyable skill for those who love the outdoors! Instruction and equipment provided. Practice for accuracy and concludes with a fun competition. Only DNR bows & arrows allowed on range. Meet at the all new Archery Range located in the reserve parking lot near the visitor center.

Friday, July 31

10:30AM Wetland Friends Adventure Hour: Find out why bobcats are special and why they need wetlands to survive through stories, games, craft and outdoor exploration! Meet at the Visitor Center.

1PM-5:30PM Marsh Mystery Hike: A self-guided, do it at your own pace, exploration of the park using a new trail, a new map and a new set of discovery clues each week. Designed to help you and your family explore the park trails together. This week's them focuses on waterfowl identification. Pick up a map and a self-guided exploration key at the Visitor Center front desk any time between 1PM and 4PM. Earn a special reward by completing the hike.

3:00PM Outdoor Explorers: Investigate the wonder of the wetlands! A unique outdoor exploration focusing on trees. Meet at the campground host site.

6:00PM-8:30PM Archery in the Parks: Learn or perfect an enjoyable skill for those who love the outdoors! Instruction and equipment provided. Practice for accuracy and concludes with a fun competition. Only DNR bows & arrows allowed on range. Meet at the all new Archery Range located in the reserve parking lot near the visitor center.

Saturday, August 1

10AM-6PM, The Saginaw Bay Waterfowl Festival: An event designed to help you and your family become more aware of Michigan's world class waterfowl resources, the sport of waterfowl hunting and conservation programs which need your support to succeed!

Includes: special art exhibits, 2010 Michigan Duck Stamp Contest, live Birds of Prey & waterfowl presentation, Sporting Dog Fun Hunt Trials, Sportsman's Puppy Alley, Duck Calling Clinic, Youth Duck & Goose Calling Contest, Team Duck Calling Contest, Adult Youth Canoe Race, Quack-athalon, Waterfowl Puppet Shows, Hunting & Outdoor Recreation Expo, Wildlife Art & Craft Show and much, much more!
