As part of its commitment to creating a more sustainable community, Delta College has been encouraging students to "Say No to Plastic" when they make purchases at the college bookstore. Students who say no to plastic, either by purchasing/bringing a reusable bag or by opting to carry their supplies by hand are given a token (donation) to place in a canister to support environmentally friendly non-profit organizations in the Saginaw Bay region.

One of the organizations students could choose from during the first year of the program was the Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy, which this September received funds from the Delta College Bookstore on behalf of the students. "This came as quite a surprise," stated Conservancy executive director Valerie Roof. "We are honored to have received this donation and will use it to help protect natural areas here in the Saginaw Bay Watershed."

"We chose the Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy as one of our recipients because we wanted to contribute to local organizations that that are actively protecting the environment and promoting sustainability here in the Saginaw Bay region," said Delta College director of business services Barbara Webb.

The Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy protects natural areas in the Saginaw Bay Watershed by setting aside land as nature preserves and through conservation agreements with private landowners. Natural lands provide wildlife habitat, improve water quality, reducing flooding risk, and provide opportunities for recreation, all of which lead to sustainable communities.

"Delta College is very committed to sustainability," explains Barbara Webb. "Our goal is to be a campus which integrates sustainability in all educational, administrative, and operation activities. The "Say No to Plastic" campaign is one of our many initiatives." The "Say No to Plastic" Campaign has reduced plastic bag use by 30% in its first year.

The Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy helps maintain the quality of life in the Saginaw Bay Watershed through the preservation of important wetlands, waterways and land of all types. The Conservancy is a non-profit charitable organization working in the Saginaw Basin. To date, the Conservancy has permanently preserved nearly 5,000 acres in the watershed.
