Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy To Hold Awards Night For Photo Contest

The Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy will be holding an awards event on Monday, October 26, 2009 to recognize the winners of the Third Annual Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy Photo Contest.
This year the Conservancy received a record 178 entries. Entries will be displayed in a presentation the Conservancy has titled "Wonders of the Watershed."
The reception will be held in the community room of the Alice & Jack Wirt Public Library in Bay City from 6:00pm - 7:30pm. Seating is limited and reservations are required. Reservations can be made by calling the Conservancy office at (989) 891-9986.
"The contest is intended to promote the beauty of natural areas and help us better appreciate the value of the resources that surround us." said Valerie Roof, executive director of the Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy. "Any way you look at it, this is great learning opportunity for anyone who wants to explore the natural wonders that lie within the Saginaw Basin."
The Saginaw Basin or Watershed is all of the land areas which drain water into the Saginaw Bay. It is the largest watershed in the state of Michigan, touching parts of 22 counties and filtering 15% of Michigan's surface area. Featuring more than 175 inland lakes and nearly 7,000 square miles of rivers and streams, this unique watershed is home to a variety of waterfowl, birds, snakes, turtles, amphibians, and more than 138 endangered or threatened species.
The Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy works to protect the Saginaw Basin through the preservation of natural areas. It owns and maintains seven nature preserves, totaling 304 acres and has agreements with 58 landowners to keep their land in a natural state, totaling more than 4,500 protected acres of private land.
Preserving natural areas certainly adds beauty to our region, as the Wonders of the Watershed presentation will prove, but also provides other important benefits. Natural areas help improve water quality by filtering out pollutants, reduce the risk of flooding, create opportunities for recreation, and provide wildlife habitat. All of which improve quality of life in the region.
The Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy helps maintain the quality of life in the Saginaw Bay Watershed through the preservation of important wetlands, waterways and land of all types. The Conservancy is a non-profit charitable organization working in the Saginaw Basin.
