"PaleoJoe" Joseph Kchodl will be your guide

Mark your calendars for a visit filled with fossil facts and hands-on fossil activities! Local paleontologist, author and speaker "PaleoJoe" Joseph Kchodl will be your guide for this fossil adventure and will share information on his most recent exhibit, Fossils of the Michigan Basin currently being shown here at the Historical Museum of Bay County.

The exhibit contains hundreds of fossil specimens of Michigan's rich paleontological history. Many are 350 million year old fossils from the Devonian Period also known as the "Age of Fish" as well as specimens from the Carboniferous Period, the so-called "Coal Age."

These marine creatures actually lived in the large inland sea that once covered what is now the state of Michigan. Fossils of the Michigan Basin features marine fossil specimens discovered in Michigan, some of which can be found as close as St. Charles! These ancient sea creatures lived, thrived and became extinct long before the Age of Dinosaurs.

The exhibit includes Brachiopods, Gastropods, Crinoids (related to today's Sea Lilies), fossilized plants and examples of primitive armor plated fish that swam in the Michigan seas. It also highlights the Michigan State stone, the Petoskey Stone, in both its natural and polished forms as well as other species of corals.

Children of all ages will enjoy many free hands-on fossil related take home crafts and activities. Visitors can watch PaleoJoe clean actual dinosaur bones including an Edmontosaurus tibia (leg bone) and an Oreodont skull! (Some special activities/crafts may have a $1.00 fee) Sign up to win a set of Dinosaur Detective Club books in the Museum Store authored by PaleoJoe. Bring in the coupon on our website and receive 25% off boxed fossils.
