NEWS RELEASE
The Essexville-Hampton Public School employees have ratified a 6% concession of their contracted compensation for the next two years, amounting to over $1.2 million in concessions to the district.
"These concessions will help stabilize our budget and financial future, keeping us out of deficit," said Superintendent Matthew Cortez.
The Essexville-Hampton Public Schools finished the 2013-14 school year in deficit of approximately $90,000. This deficit was projected to grow to nearly $600,000 if nothing was changed this year.
"The required filing of a deficit elimination plan was completed by the district and the tremendous support to that plan and dedication to the fiscal health of the district is illustrated by the concessions made by every employee in the entire district," said Mr. Cortez.
The Essexville-Hampton Board of Education and Administrative Team commended their staff stating:
"During the past weeks we have witnessed the true nature and character of
what it means to be a Duke. Every group of employees have stepped forth
and taken responsibility for our district. You have all taken responsibility
for the circumstances that we currently face and yet had little to no say in
the direct cause of these circumstances. That is nothing short of astonishing."
The statement continues:
"It is humbling to watch so many various people believe in a common ideal,
which we know as the Essexville-Hampton Public Schools. Your sacrifice and tremendous dedication is a shining example of the quality of our district and what every one of us attempts to instill in every student.
"While this takes a tremendous toll on each of us, in different ways, it
resoundingly proclaims that our students continue to get the best education
they are entitled to and the future they deserve. It is a message to our entire community that when the cards are down, and the future unclear, we will stand together to make our own destiny.
"Our community needs to be told of what you all have done and how your
sacrifice will help each of our students and our district. We need to illustrate to them that our district is worth fighting for and our students deserve the best, the best teachers, the best staff members, and the best facilities.
"The message is loud and clear that the Essexville-Hampton Public Schools are correcting their course and making changes to ensure a brighter future. We have addressed internal financial challenges and are now looking to solve the infrastructural challenges that will be addressed through our February bond and sinking fund election.
"We now need our community to support us, as selflessly as the employees have done to help in 'Forging a New Foundation' for the Essexville-Hampton Public School district and its students."
