Jennifer Whyte
Rotarian Konnie Gill, Directory of the McLaren Bay Medical Foundation, talked to Rotary about the impact of suicide and mental health issues on families. The foundation's funding focus for 2015 is to raise $557,000 for renovation of McLaren Bay's Behavioral Health Unit over the next two years.

Konnie introduced Jennifer Whyte, Program Manager at the Behavioral Health Unit, who gave some background and statistics about the unit and its needs.

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S. While all of the other top 10 are declining at a steady rate, the suicide rate remains constant. In Bay County nearly 3 in 10 residents reported mental health issues. Despite this number, only 14% receive treatment.

The McLaren Bay Behavioral Health Unit was build in the 1970's, but not for that purpose. Today the outdated unit is using the original furniture and struggles to meet the needs of the nearly 1,000 patients it sees yearly.

Jennifer talked about the current issues and discussed modern standards and the changes required at the BH Unit. She emphasized patient and staff safety and illustrated a number of dangers presented by unstable patients.

Konnie closed by saying that the foundation will reach its goal but that it needs the help of the community. She mentioned several of the upcoming events and invited Rotarians to attend.

CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS

The board meets this week
April 14 at 11:00 before the regular meeting.
Everyone is welcomed.

President Brenda Scramlin's first order of business was to present Past-President Ron Bloomfield with the past-president pin. Ron's service was greatly appreciated and the club looks forward to his continued service to Rotary.

The club Board met today. Among the items was announcement that incoming District Governor Mike Kelly will attend the next board meeting then speak to the club's regular meeting. Everyone is welcomed to that, and all, board meetings.

The board ratified a proposal by the Vocational Day's committee to hold only one event next year and to move that to November 10. This decision was based on discussions with the school system.

Cherri Burzynski currently handles all new member orientations. Volunteers are asked to join her committee and assist with this function.

Note that the Doubletree has raised the meal price. Starting this term, members are asked to pay $12 at the door. Members may alternatively pre-pay meals with their dues.

Members, family and friends are reminded that Brenda is leading a "Rotary Wednesday Walkout" at Wenonah Park each Wednesday evening at 6:15. The objective is to get in shape for the Fall ZOMBIE RUN (and Walk). Bob Chadwick mentioned other information about the Zombie Run on October 10.

Nancy Greve has a supply of magnetic Rotary Pins. These will be available at the each meeting for $5 each. Steve Kent keeps a supply of regular pins if anyone needs to replace a lost pin or just wants an extra or two.

Cindy Chadwick, chief Sargent at Arms is looking for assistants. If you're interested, see her.
