Lisa Grills

The Rotary speaker on September 1 was Lisa Grills Executive Director of the YWCA, an organization that started in Bay County all the way back in 1891.

Lisa talked about some of the YW's background and some of its programs. The YW focuses on the advancement of women in the Great Lakes Bay Region. They further focus on advocacy of families and helping women become economically self sufficient.

Among the core programs is the Women's Resource Center, the Advocacy Initiatives, Professional Development, Parent Education, Getting Ahead, and Special Needs Summer Camps.

The Resource Center helps women with many of the tech requirement of today's work from doing a good resume to using computers and the internet to take advantage of those tools and programs. Women can work on things like literacy skills or just finishing their GED. The YW runs tech centers in Bay City, Saginaw and Midland.

A 13-week workshop called Getting Ahead is a combination of self-examination and economic education. It assists women to meet their personal economic goals. Lisa went on to talk about other programs and she answered questions including one about the Unity Picnic that was once held. She said there is some interest in bringing that event back.
