Marie Seddon
Rotary welcomed Marie Seddon from MSU to talk about the "Online Master of Science in Food Safety" program. Founded in 2002 and fully online in 2013, the program offers a Masters to professionals, most from industry, who have demands on their time that make traditional campus based degrees difficult.

This Food Safety program is run from the Veterinary school. As it turns out, many food safety courses come from that direction, probably because food safety in the military is found in the vet services. Seddon and veterinaries in the club noted that those professionals are schooled in animal husbandry and the diseases that would be found in the food chain.

The online nature of the degree has many advantages for professionals. The 30 credit, 10 course degree can usually be completed in three years, compared to five years in traditional programs. It is also designed as an asynchronous program allowing students to take the course in the order that makes sense to them.

Students are typically mid-career, full-time professionals in their mid-30s. The MSU instructors and staff comr from academia, iundustry, government and alumni. The program is accredited by the National Association of Professional Science Master's.

The curriculum is designed with input from and advisory board that includes members from industry. A minimum 60% of the courses are STEM content and another 20% is professional skills. It also contains an experiential learning component. The objective is to "prepare students for high-level careers in science, strong emphasis on management, policy or entrepreneurship".

The program boasts 232 graduates and currently has 240 active students. Female students outnumber makes 2 to 1. The majority come from industry or the government and represent 24 countries. Employers represent some of the top companies in food services.

CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS

The club welcomes new member Paul Wiese who was inducted today by Andreas Teich.

President Brenda noted that on December 29, the Tuesday between Christmas and New Year, the club will enjoy fellowship rather than inviting a speaker. Everyone is encouraged to attend, share the meal, and enjoy the company of your fellow Rotarians.

The club will meet off-site at the Depot on January 5.

Rob Clark was thanked for the inspirational program last week, which featured the interview style panel of former polio patients.

Members are reminded that the next "Rotary Night Out At The Brewery" will be held January 14, 2016 at the Governor's Quarters, 1304 S. Wenona Street. Jeff Yantz will be the featured entertainment that evening. Food and drinks of all types will be avalible for purchase. This is a time to relax and kick up your heels and get to know fellow Rotarians in a very relaxed setting.

Andrea still needs a second family to host our exchange student for the Spring school session. She also says that the exchange for next year is being scheduled now and she needs a first host family on file so they can get busy on obtaining a passport.
