As usual, Michigan is at the center of the political vortex.
Never in my lifetime has any election like the one this year been so dramatically important.
Since I wasn't born until 1937, I missed the first two FDR votes and that revolution of the New Deal was well underway by the time I came along in Chicago.
Bernie Sanders is right on -- this year is yuuuuuuge!
It is not just a power struggle between the Republicans and the Democrats, one renewed every four years. It is vastly more important, a potential generational shift in attitude with years of injustice compressed into one chance for the vox populi to change the direction of the nation.
But without change from top to bottom in the ruling class (read Congress, state legislatures, the Supreme Court, etc.) the people will have failed.
The distress of the voters is so real that the old shibboleths have been let loose by the would-be leaders of the future: the words Fascism & Communism replacing Conservative and Liberal in the name-calling, finger-pointing class.
As usual, Michigan is at the center of the political vortex. The governor is about to face a recall over the most symbolic of all betrayals of trust: failure to put the welfare of the public over the greedy demands of ideological partisans.
A book of clippings from today's headlines eyed in years to come will make a frightening morality tale that will cause any student to shake his or her head and weep.
No, I do not exaggerate.
The Flint Water Crisis, self-inflicted by so-called "Small Government Conservatives" espousing anarchist actions, will be a tale of awesome woe beyond any monster saga that could be contrived.
You have heard it all, read it all, no need to beat a dead cat here.
As we have opined previously, Flint, Michigan, is the eye of the storm, the apex of the hurricane, the first wave of the tsunami washing over the land of the free and the home of the brave.
If the ruling class can continue to subvert the health of the people for a mess of pottage, for a handful of shekels, we are doomed.
But I think not!
Like the bywords of the French Revolution: Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite -- still stirring to the souls of men and women, the people will not be denied.
The broom will sweep just as clean as in 1932, from pillar to post the careers of like-minded despots will fall away under the power of the people.
Who are these people, the angry voters so frequently described, on both sides of the partisan divide?
They are the 99 percent; they are the 45 percent of the voters -- 106 million people -- who did not turn out in the last national election, dismayed by their leaders, despondent over the failure of promised change. But now they are energized by an ancient warrior, a candidate condemned as a radical or much worse.
His main appeal? Honesty.
Remember, 30 percent of the masses who will make up this year's voting public -- the young -- were born in a different age, in 1998 or before. At least age 18, they are idealistic and know nothing of convention, of the usual order of things; they are desperate for the justice and equality they have been taught in school is their heritage, the eternal promise of America.
The great mass of the unwashed will rise up and smite the giants of apathy, crush the demons of corruption and defeat the reign of gold and riches rampant in the land.
Yes, the world can change; it did in 1215 with the Magna Charta in England, with the American Revolution in 1776 in the British Colonies, in 1789 with the Uprising in Paris leading to the abolition of feudalism and the monarchy.
France rapidly transformed into a democratic and secular society with freedom of religion, legalization of divorce, decriminalization of same-sex relationships, and civil rights for Jews and black people.
And it will change in 2016 in America.
Watch it.
Live it.
Make notes.
You can tell your grandchildren you were part of it.
Or how you tried futilely to stop it.
