April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. And what better way to kick off this awareness than to have the Great Lakes Bay Region of the CAN Council hold their Ceremony at the Bay County Department of Health and Human Services offices on Center Ave., in Bay County. While the cold winds blew off the bay, it was the heartwarming whirling of the pinwheels that provided the inspiration. The Pinwheel represents the healthy, happy, full life all children deserve.

Catherine Martinez, Community Outreach Specialist for the CAN Council, was the spokesperson for the event. Following the reading of the Bay County Declaration by County Executive, Tom Hickner, Probate Judge John C. Keuvelaar read the Prayer for Children. This prayer demonstrates what children of abuse and neglect go through and miss out on as compared to children who experience life without being neglected or abused.

Throughout the month of April, various schools, Head Start Buildings, businesses, Government buildings and churches will be planting Pinwheel Gardens to help bring awareness to child abuse and neglect. Those wishing to show their support may purchase Pinwheels at various McDonald's restaurants throughout the Bay County and Freeland area. Let's help end child abuse and neglect by purchasing a Pinwheel to show support for this cause.
