Tara Welch
Tara Welch , Executive Director of Studio 23/The Arts Center in Downtown Bay City as well as a Rotarian, spoke to Rotary about the programs, activities and events of the organization.
Studio 23 started in 1959 and derived its name from its original location in Wieland Furniture's building on US-23, the famous highway that runs from Jacksonville, Florida to Mackinaw City. Today that highway coincides with I-75, but Studio 23 has moved a number of times as well and is now housed in ground floor of the Jennison Building on the river adjacent to Wenonah Park and the Friendship shell.
A non-profit 501(c)3 organization, Studio 23 brings visual arts and creative educational to the entire area. Eight art exhibits are mounted each year and feature art from professional to a "Teenworks & Kids Kreations" show.
The Exhibits compliment educations offerings in many mediums including after school programs, clay, painting, drawing, photography, Sip-N-Swirl, Cupcakes N Canvas, and Paint N Takes.
Upstairs, a full clay studio offers classes and workshop areas to potters at all levels.
The Studio also reaches out to the community with many programs. Most recently they partnered with Leadership Bay County to produce the compass rose street art at the entrance to Wenonah Park.
High School students collaborated to design a huge mural on the East walkway under the Veteran's bridge. The project included funding from Rotary and other groups and the final design included credit to those organizations with such things as the Rotary Wheel on the side of a car in the painting. The East Side piece will be complimented with one on the west side next.
